Ongoing environmental crises reveal how state and market-led development efforts prioritize economic growth but neglect concerns of working people. Increasing ecological degradation has an adverse impact on labour precarity, especially across caste and gender. Yet, climate and conservation initiatives seldom challenge dominant capitalist structures and often further rather than challenging dominant capitalist operations, conservation initiatives address a deteriorating environment and end up marketizing nature, further alienate working people from the environment. However, the sustained growth of working people’s resistance movements to protect nature from becoming private property under exploitative regimes of extraction highlight how their struggles are inseparable from environmental issues. This book series examines the apparently contradictory relationships between economic development, ecology and labor, and brings stories of diverse struggles for environmental social justice by offering grounded analyses of labour, caste, and nature in the context of present-day environmental crises.

சூழல், சமூகம், அரசியல்

அரசின் வளர்ச்சித்திட்ட முன்னெடுப்புகள் எவ்வாறு பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சிக்கு மட்டுமே முன்னுரிமை அளிக்கின்றன என்பதையும் மறுபுறம் இத்திட்டங்களால் பாதிப்புகளை எதிர்கொள்ளும் உழைக்கும் மக்களின் நலன்களை  எவ்வாறு புறக்கணிக்கின்றன என்பதையும் தற்கால சுற்றுச்சூழல் நெருக்கடிகள் வெளிப்படுத்துகின்றன. அதிகரித்து வரும் சுற்றுச்சூழல் சீர்கேடுகள் அடிமட்டத் தொழிலாளர்கள், குறிப்பாக ஒடுக்கப்பட்ட சாதியினரையும், பெண்களையும் பெரிதும் பாதிக்கிறது. காலநிலை மற்றும் சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பிற்கான உலகலாவிய அமைப்புகளின் விதிமுறைகள் முதலாளித்துவ கட்டமைப்புகளை மிக அரிதாகவே கட்டுப்படுத்துகின்றன. இதனால், உழைக்கும் மக்கள் தங்கள் வாழ்விடங்களில் இருந்து அந்நியப்படுவது தொடர் கதையாய் உள்ளது. இதற்கு எதிர்வினையாய், இயற்கை சுரண்டலை ஊக்குவிக்கும் அதிகார வர்க்கத்திடம் இருந்து தங்கள் வாழ்வாதாரத்தை பாதுகாக்க, பொதுவளத்தை தனியார் சொத்தாக மாற்றுவதற்கு எதிரான உழைக்கும் மக்களின் தொடர் போராட்டங்கள் காணமுடிகிறது. சுற்றுச்சூழல் இயக்கத்தின் பிரிக்க முடியாத பகுதியாகவேஇப்போராட்டங்களை பார்க்க வேண்டும்.  இப்பின்னணியில், இப்புத்தகத் தொடர் பொருளாதார வளர்ச்சி, சூழலியல் மற்றும் உழைப்புக்கு இடையிலான முரண்பாடான உறவுகளை ஆராய்வதாக அமைகிறது.   சூழலியல் நீதிக்கான பல்வேறு போராட்டங்களையும், அதில் உழைப்பு, சாதி மற்றும் சூழல் ஆகியவற்றின் வகிப்பிடத்தை பகுப்பாய்வதாகவும் இப்பதிவுகள் அமையும்.
