Between 1764 and 1774, the British East India Company conducted a survey in about 500 villages in the present day Chengalpattu district, collecting information on the revenue of these villages. Documents of this survey are preserved as palm leaf manuscripts. These documents give us social and economic information such as the social structure, land use, irrigation, production relations, revenue sharing methods, entitlements and tax concession in each of the 500 villages. Revenue records of ten of these villages are edited and made accessible to the modern reader, in this book. This book provides the reader a glimpse into the everyday practice of the village accountants, their role in the village economy and politics. By doing so this book shows how everyday practice of mathematics is an inextricable part of the social and economic fabric, as they constantly assign value to the labour and lives of the working people.
